Crematory Born
Bronze Sculpture

Crematory Born, developed with my exploration of the medium and the malleable nature of wax for creating forms.

Inspired by a poem by Lewis-Alan Trathen at a slam reading, this piece evolved from the image they portrayed of being born while bushfires raged outside of the hospital, the windows becoming covered in ash. I wanted to create a character with the strength to persevere, and using the lost-wax process by fire create the proverbial Phoenix rising from the ashes.

‘Crematory Born’ is about surviving through adversity, burning away the past, rising up anew through the ashes, not necessarily whole, but stronger. A motif of metempsychosis.
